Dont know of cures, my son had this when he was 3 – 6 months old we got a monitor which set off an alarm when he stopped breathing and hen we simply woke him up. Might be better than drugs and you can pass it on to some one else when he needs it no more

Instead of searching for the natural remedies, I think it will be better if you can explain the situation to the family members and convince them. Try it once, you may succeed.

Obstructive sleep apnea in elderly is treated symptomatically very successfully by the use of CPAP(continuous positive airway pressure) machine. This is an expensive machine but is worth the expense. Person has to use this machine everyday through the night where the machine maintains an optimal breathing pressure and the patient does not get choked because of sleep apnea nor is his sleep disturbed. It is best to consult a Pulmonologist (respiration specialist). The family of the patient does not want to spend the money is a serious problem. You may look for funding from voluntary organisations or health agencies who work for the elderly depending upon where you live. You are doing a good cause and people will support you on this. Hats off to you.

    (apnea)

Most doctors automatically prescribe CPAP for sleep apnea

Many doctors are unaware of other sleep apnea treatments besides CPAP
According to research up to 50% of sleep apnea sufferers stop using their CPAP within 3 months
A large percentage of sleep apnea sufferers are looking for an alternative to CPAP

You’re probably reading this letter because you’re in the same situation I was in two years ago.

You’re tired of being tired all the time. Days go by in a blur. You wake up foggy-headed, probably cranky. You survive the day with lots of caffeine.
And yet for all your efforts, your life is still probably how it was for my wife. Chronically fatigued, falling asleep during the day – sometimes in embarrassing places.

And you suffer because you haven’t managed to conquer your sleep apnea.
But that’s not from a lack of trying. You’ve asked your doctor what you can do to cure your sleep apnea. His only suggestion is the dreaded CPAP. — http://tinyurl.com/32jzdbu

    Hei Tom,

you work for an old man..that’s nice of you. If you thinking about treating him with Vervain, then maybe the old man has a milder case of sleep apnea. Am I right?

I hope you already know that the most effective treatment for sleep apnea is CPAP, but his family should take care of this problem, not you. The CPAP machine is expensive.

Sherry Torkos wrote in Encyclopedia of Natural Cures that “Valerian is an herb that is used for its calming and sedating properties. Studies show that it is useful for insomnia and chronic sleep disorders. It may take a few weeks to get the optimal effect. Some studies have found benefits with valerian when it is combined with hops and/or lemon balm. It is generally well tolerated, and does not cause next-day drowsiness when taken at bedtime. It is not recommended for use in conjunction with prescription sleep aids..”

Did the patient tried positional therapy? Is very effective in people with mild obstructive sleep apnea.
